Welcome to my tour stop for ‘This Heart of Mine’ by Brenda Novak. ‘This Heart of Mine’ is the 8th book in the Whiskey Creek series, but can definitely be read as a standalone. The tour will consist of reviews and spotlights and runs March 16- April 7th. Check out the tour page for more information.
About the Book:
As the daughter of a hoarder, Phoenix Fuller had a tough childhood. So when the handsome, popular Riley Stinson became her boyfriend in high school, she finally felt as though she had something to be proud of. Phoenix was desperate not to lose him—especially once she found out she was pregnant. Yes, she might have acted a bit obsessive when he broke up with her. But she did not run down the girl he started dating next!
Unfortunately, there was no way to prove her innocence. Now, after serving her time in prison, Phoenix has been released. All she wants to do is return to Whiskey Creek and get to know her son. But Jacob's father isn't exactly welcoming.
Riley doesn't trust Phoenix, doesn't want her in Jacob's life. He is, however, ready to find someone to love. And he wants a good mother for his son. He has no idea that he's about to find both—if they can forgive the mistakes in their past…
When I first saw the sign up for the ‘This Heart of Mine’ blog tour I immediately really wanted to read this book. The book description sounded so interesting to me. So when I learned I would be a part of the tour I couldn’t be more excited.
In ‘This Heart of Mine’ we meet Phoenix, a woman in her thirties who spend seventeen years of her life in prison for a murder she claims she didn’t do. When Phoenix was seventeen years old she fell madly in love with Riley. She thought they were happy but unfortunately Riley broke up with her. Devastated and jealous, like teenagers in love can be, she bullied Riley’s new girlfriend. And that’s when everything went wrong.
Now seventeen years later Phoenix has come back to the town she grew up in, to get to know her son Jacob. Phoenix tries everything she can to become a part of Jacob’s life. Even if that means she has to risk her life by being a part of a community that clearly doesn’t want her.
From the moment I started in ‘This Heart of Mine’ I was really impressed by Brenda Novak’s writing style. This book is addictive and heartbreaking at times. Phoenix is this kind, honest and brave woman who happened to be at the wrong place in the wrong time. I can’t imagine how, but somehow Phoenix survived her years in prison and now all she wants to do is be a part of her sons life. Phoenix is really kind and makes sure Riley knows that she isn’t going to be a burden for him. But what Phoenix doesn’t know is that Riley is blown away by Phoenix. He is blown away by her kindness and the way she really thinks she is not worth loving. This book was a beautiful story about how fast life can change and how things don’t always are the way they seem.
This book was truly a beautiful and inspirational story. I loved Phoenix and her kindness towards everyone around her, even though most people didn’t deserve her kindness. I loved the way Brenda Novak was able to completely pull me into the story. Although I sometimes found some stuff a little hard to believe, for example the way Phoenix survived prison, this really didn’t bother me that much. She was just so kind, honest and pure that it’s hard for me to believe she could survive such a harsh place. But most of all I really enjoyed this story. I really enjoyed the writing style and I loved the romance. This book will definitely be in my mind for some time.
